Last year, it was announced that the official Indian remake of the 2015 Hollywood film, The Intern was in the works. The film revolves around a young and driven entrepreneur (Anne Hathaway) and a 70-year-old retired gentleman (Robert De Niro) who starts a senior internship program under her and how they develop an unlikely and heartwarming friendship. The Indian adaptation was set to star Deepika Padukone alongside the late actor, Rishi Kapoor.
A few days ago, we had written about reports that suggested that Amitabh Bachchan has been approached to step into Rishi Kapoor’s shoes. Today, Deepika took to her Instagram to share the official announcement about Amitabh joining the film. This is not the first time Mr. Bachchan and Deepika will be coming together on screen. They have been loved by audiences all over for having played the eccentric and loveable father-daughter duo in Shoojit Sircar‘s Piku. Well, I am super excited for my favourite ‘Piku‘ duo to come together for this heartwarming films, again, one of my favourites!
The intern is presented by Athena and Warner Bros. Pictures (India). It is set to be directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and produced by Sunir Kheterpal and Deepika. It is slated to release in the summer of 2022.

Last year, we heard some super exciting news about Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro‘s 2015 film ‘The Intern’ getting an official Hindi remake. Deepika Padukone and Rishi Kapoor were set to play the lead cast, but due to veteran actor Rishi Kapoor’s unfortunate demise, the makers of the film put it on hold.
Now, news is that Amitabh Bachchan is set to reprise Robert De Niro’s role as a retired gentleman who decides to intern in a new-age digital company that is headed by Deepika Padukone’s character.
Bollywood Hungama quotes a source as saying that Rishi Ji’s death had caused the film to be put on hold and the makers had to re-analyse the casting. Now, the source adds that they have finally zeroed in on Amitabh Bachchan and that talks are on to finalise the dates with the cast members.
We all loved DP and Amit Ji‘s magical and effortless camaraderie in Piku, amirite? This time around, we know they are stepping into two characters who are also attached by a lovely, sweet bond and I cannot wait to see the magic they create on-screen together!

Just as we’re grappling at the loss of one of the most legendary actors in Bollywood, Irfan Khan, we’ve lost another icon as well. It breaks our heart to report that veteran actor Rishi Kapoor breathed his last today at 67 years of age. Rishi ji who was battling leukemia from 2018 succumbed to the disease today morning at 8:45 AM in a hospital in Mumbai. Both his wife Neetu Kapoor and his son Ranbir Kapoor were by his side. His brother Randhir Kapoor revealed that he was rushed to the hospital after having complained of not feeling well on Wednesday morning. In a statement released by his family after his passing, they request his fans and friends to follow the protocol we’re living under the lockdown.
Here’s the official statement from the Kapoor family below:
Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last.
He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him.
He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears.
In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force.
He would not have it any other way.
We hope and pray for his soul to rest in peace.
